White Noise for Babies: Everything You Need to Know for Better Sleep
What Is White Noise?
White noise is a steady, consistent sound made up of all frequencies played at equal intensity. Think of it as the sound of static on a TV, a hair dryer, or a whirring fan. To adults, it may sound unremarkable—but for babies, white noise can be a sleep superpower.
Benefits of White Noise for Baby Sleep
✔️ Blocks Disruptive Noises
White noise masks external sounds like barking dogs, siblings playing, or traffic—helping your baby stay asleep longer.
✔️ Mimics the Womb
The womb is not a quiet place. White noise replicates the constant, rhythmic sounds your baby heard in utero, which can be deeply soothing and familiar.
✔️ Stimulates Self-Soothing
Much like a calming “shhh,” white noise can trigger your baby’s natural ability to settle themselves—especially when used as part of a consistent bedtime routine.
✔️ Establishes Sleep Cues
Over time, white noise becomes a sleep association. When used consistently, it tells your baby, “It’s time to sleep now.”

Is White Noise Safe for Babies?
Yes when used correctly.
🟢 Keep the volume low: No more than 50 decibels, roughly the sound of a quiet conversation.
🟢 Keep it at a safe distance: Place the sound machine at least 2 metres (7 feet) from your baby’s cot or bassinet.
🟢 Use only during sleep: Avoid running white noise all day, or it loses its power as a sleep cue and your baby needs to hear everyday sounds too!
Do White Noise Machines Really Work?
They absolutely can. One study found that 80% of newborns fell asleep within 5 minutes of hearing white noise. Many parents find that sound machines improve both sleep onset and sleep duration, especially in newborns and younger infants.
And it’s not just anecdotal white noise is supported by both clinical research and decades of use by sleep consultants like myself.
Can Babies Become Dependent on White Noise?
Some babies do become accustomed to white noise, but that’s not a bad thing! Unlike rocking or feeding to sleep, white noise doesn’t require your physical involvement. It’s a hands-off tool that can support sleep well into toddlerhood and even beyond.
If you’re travelling or away from your usual setup, you can always use a white noise app or portable machine. It’s one of my top items on my newborn sleep essentials list.
Can You Use a Phone for White Noise?
Yes, but there’s a catch.
While white noise apps are convenient, phone speakers can sometimes distort sound making it too sharp or high-pitched. For best results, I recommend using a sound machine specifically designed for baby sleep. It ensures the right volume, tone, and consistency.

Can I Use White Noise During the Day?
Only during naps! Avoid running white noise constantly throughout the day. Overuse may make it less effective at night and prevent your baby from tuning in to the sounds they need to learn like voices, music, or natural environmental cues.
What If I Want to Try Other Types of Noise?
Great question! While white noise is the most well-known, researchers have discovered a rainbow of sound “colours” that may help with sleep. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Pink Noise
Sounds like soft rain or rustling leaves.
💤 May support deeper sleep and stress reduction in adults; safe to try with babies.
Brown Noise (aka Red Noise)
Deeper, like thunder or a distant waterfall.
💤 Many babies find it more soothing than white noise. Personally, it’s one of my top picks for baby sleep.
Grey Noise
A more balanced, less “static” version of white noise.
💤 Research is limited, but some babies respond well to it.
Blue Noise
Higher-pitched, often likened to “baby talk.”
💤 Less commonly used, but may work for babies who respond to high tones.
Purple (Violet) Noise
Very high-frequency, like the sound of a faucet squealing.
💤 Not generally recommended for baby sleep, but has some adult use cases (e.g., tinnitus relief).
Every baby is unique—feel free to experiment with different sound “colours” and see which one calms your little one best.
Do Sound Machines Help Adults Too?
Absolutely! If you’re struggling with your own sleep, white noise (or even brown or pink noise) may help you fall asleep faster and wake up less during the night.
Better yet? Well-rested parents are more present, more patient, and better equipped to care for their little ones.
