What is a baby dream feed?

What is a baby dream feed?

Have you heard of a dream feed? A dream feed can be a game-changer for many families, helping their baby sleep through the night. But how does it work? And can it really help your baby sleep better?

A dream feed involves feeding your baby without fully waking them.

Here’s how you do it:

1. Pick Up Your Baby: Gently take your sleeping baby out of their sleep space. Ensure the room is dimly lit and quiet, except for white noise if you use it.
2. Stimulate Feeding: Touch your baby’s cheek with your breast or bottle. This stimulates their rooting reflex, prompting them to start feeding.
3. Feed Briefly: Offer a shorter feed than usual.
4. Burp Your Baby: If possible, burp your baby, though this can be tricky when they are very sleepy.
5. Return to Sleep: Place your baby back in their sleep space. If they wake up, encourage them to self-soothe back to sleep.

Do Dream Feeds Help?

Dream feeds can be effective. Many parents find that feeding their baby just before they go to bed helps the baby sleep longer, reducing the number of night waking’s.

Some parents start dream feeds when their baby is around three months old, as babies can naturally go longer without milk at this age.

Potential Downsides

While dream feeds can be beneficial, they are not without downsides:

– Digestion Issues: Babies might have trouble digesting milk while asleep, leading to gas.
– Reflux: This is particularly problematic for babies with reflux.
– Habitual Feeding: Feeding a baby who isn’t hungry can create a habitual feeding pattern that’s hard to break.

Due to these concerns, some sleep consultants advise against dream feeds, preferring baby-led night feedings for nutritional reasons.

When to Stop Dream Feeding

Deciding when to stop dream feeding is tricky. If it’s working well, you might continue until you’re ready to phase it out. Stopping a dream feed can make your baby wake up hungry at night due to their metabolic memory of the feed. Some experts suggest stopping around six months, coinciding with weaning. However, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all rule, as each baby’s needs differ.

Do Babies Sleep Longer with a Dream Feed?

Ideally, yes. A dream feed around the parents’ bedtime can help babies sleep longer stretches, reducing the number of night wakings. However, if a baby doesn’t actually need the dream feed, it might be better to let them sleep naturally until they wake up hungry.

Should You Risk Waking a Sleeping Baby?

When done gently, a dream feed shouldn’t fully wake the baby. However, if the baby does wake, it might be harder to get them back to sleep. The goal is to keep the baby in a drowsy state while feeding.

What if Your Baby Wakes After a Dream Feed?

If your baby wakes, take the opportunity to burp them. A well-burped baby is usually more comfortable and likely to sleep better. Then, put them back in their crib to self-soothe or replicate your usual bedtime routine to help them sleep.

Should You Dream Feed Newborns?

Newborns need regular night feedings. Once they start sleeping longer stretches, let them wake naturally for feeds. Establishing good sleep foundations will help them eventually sleep through the night without needing feeds.

Overall view on a baby dream feed

While there are benefits to dream feeding, we advocate for baby-led feeding. This approach helps avoid creating metabolic habits and focuses on teaching babies to self-settle, providing long-term sleep benefits.
