Understanding Children’s Sleep Needs by Age
Understanding Children’s Sleep Needs by Age
As parents, we often wonder how much sleep our children truly require. While adults typically aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, growing kids need more to support their mental and physical development. However, getting kids to bed can be challenging, especially when they resist or struggle with sleep.
Here are the recommended sleep durations for different age groups:
- Two Years Old:
- Daytime: 1 hour 30 minutes
- Nighttime: 11 hours 30 minutes
- Three Years Old:
- Daytime: Up to 45 minutes
- Nighttime: 11 hours 30 minutes to 12 hours
- Four Years Old:
- No daytime nap recommended
- Nighttime: 11 hours 30 minutes
- Five Years Old:
- Nighttime: 11 hours
- Six Years Old:
- Nighttime: 10 hours 45 minutes
- Seven Years Old:
- Nighttime: 10 hours 30 minutes
- Eight Years Old:
- Nighttime: 10 hours 15 minutes
- Nine Years Old:
- Nighttime: 10 hours
- Ten Years Old:
- Nighttime: 9 hours 45 minutes
- Eleven Years Old:
- Nighttime: 9 hours 30 minutes
- Twelve Years Old:
- Nighttime: 9 hours 15 minutes
- Teenagers (13-17 Years Old):
- Nighttime: 9 hours 15 minutes (up to 10 hours for 17-year-olds)
Remember that individual variations exist, but these guidelines provide a helpful framework for ensuring your child gets the right amount of rest.
