Teething vs. Regression

Teething vs. Regression: Decoding Your Baby’s Sleep Challenges

As a parent, it’s common to wonder whether your baby’s sleep disruptions are due to teething or developmental regression. Let’s explore how to differentiate between the two:

1. Teething:

  • Timing:
    • Around the 3-4 month mark, parents often mistake normal infant behaviour for teething.
    • During this period, babies start exploring their hands and increasing saliva production in anticipation of solid food introduction.
    • Teething pain disruptions typically last a few days while the tooth is cutting through the gum.
  • Physical Signs:
    • Look out for the following teething symptoms:
      • Increased Saliva Production
      • Fussiness
      • Red Cheeks
      • Irritability
      • Clinginess
      • Comfort Feeding (more frequent nursing or bottle feeding)
      • Reduced Solid Food Intake

2. Regression:

  • Timing:
    • Developmental milestones can cause sleep regression for several weeks.
    • Babies may experience temporary setbacks in sleep patterns due to new skills they’re practicing.
  • Physical Signs:
    • Here’s what to observe during regression:
      • No Red Cheeks
      • Increased Feeding (both milk and solid intake)
      • Actively Practicing New Skills (rolling, crawling, etc.)
      • No Significant Changes in Saliva Production
      • Focused on Learning and Exploring New Abilities

Remember that every baby is unique, and both teething and regression are normal parts of their growth journey. Pay attention to the specific signs your little one exhibits to understand their needs better.
