Steps for Soothing a Restless Baby
Steps for Soothing a Restless Baby
There’s nothing quite as peaceful as watching your baby sleep. The gentle rise and fall of their breath, the cozy softness of their sleep sack, and their tiny arms resting by their sides create a serene image—at least, that’s what we picture. But once your little one starts rolling and discovering their ability to move in the crib, you might find them in odd and seemingly uncomfortable positions, which can be worrying.
It’s common for babies to adopt unusual sleeping postures that look anything but restful. While these might make you chuckle during the day, they often cause concern when you see them on the baby monitor in the middle of the night. You may wonder whether you should leave your baby as they are or intervene to reposition them.
When it comes to nurturing independent sleep skills, one of the main challenges for parents is deciding what to do when their baby seems uncomfortable while sleeping. The key is to prioritize safety above all else. For instance, if your baby has learned to roll onto their stomach but can’t yet roll back, you might need to help them reposition until they master rolling both ways. Although this might briefly disrupt their sleep, ensuring their safety is crucial.
Fortunately, babies usually learn to roll both ways fairly quickly, especially with daytime practice. If your baby’s position could cause harm, like a limb sticking out of the crib, it’s important to intervene quietly and gently. However, if they simply look uncomfortable but aren’t in danger, it’s usually best to let them be. Babies often find comfort in the most unconventional postures, and as long as their airway is clear, they’re likely just fine.
If your baby becomes restless and starts to cry, here are some effective steps you can take to soothe them:
1. Swaddle Your Baby: Wrapping your baby snugly can help them feel secure and calm.
2. Try the Jell-O Head Jiggle: Hold your swaddled baby in a breastfeeding position, with their head resting on your forearm. Gently jiggle them with tiny, rapid movements, just enough to make their head quiver slightly like Jell-O. This can activate the calming reflex in upset babies.
3. Use the Milkshake Jiggle: If your baby is particularly fussy, sit them on your lap. Support their chin with one hand and their bottom with the other. Lean them slightly forward and gently bounce them up and down with quick, small movements. Always support your baby’s head and neck, and keep the movements small.
4. Create Soothing Sounds: Contrary to popular belief, soothing a crying baby often requires louder, more intense sounds rather than soft whispers. Try making a strong “Shhhhh” sound close to your baby’s ear or turning up the volume on a white noise machine. Just be sure to lower the volume once they’ve calmed down.
5. Combine Motion and Sound: Think of calming your baby as a dance. Start with more vigorous movements and louder sounds when they’re upset, then gradually ease into gentler rocking and softer white noise as they calm down.
6. Consider Other Comfort Measures: Ensure your baby’s environment is sleep-friendly—comfortably cool, dark, and quiet. Pay attention to their wake windows to prevent overtiredness and practice some gentle belly massages or knee-to-tummy exercises during the day to prevent nighttime tummy troubles.
Remember, every baby is different, and what works for one might not work for another. Always prioritize safety, consult your paediatrician about safe sleep practices, and trust your instincts. Rest assured, with patience and practice, you’ll find the right soothing routine for your little one.
