Routine for a Four to Six-Week-Old Baby
Routine for a Four to Six-Week-Old Baby
During the first few weeks and months, it’s typical for babies to wake up for feeds at least two or three times during the night. However, rest assured that this phase won’t last forever!
As you continue to bond with your little one, their history extends beyond their birth. You’re becoming more familiar with their sounds, feeding habits, and wakefulness patterns. Yet, there will still be moments when your 4-6 week old baby surprises you with new behaviours. This is entirely normal.
Each day brings opportunities for growth and skill development. From focusing their eyes to smiling and moving, these abilities require practice and energy. So, don’t be surprised if some days your baby seems unchanged, while other days they’re busy showcasing their newfound skills.
4-6 Week-Old Baby Patterns
During this period, your baby will still sleep a lot. Sleep is crucial for growth, as it releases growth hormones and conserves energy. However, your baby might not always be eager to sleep, and you may spend a lot of time trying to settle them.
Feeding
Your baby’s sucking strength may have increased. Feeding actively involves a complex series of coordinated actions. While attaching correctly, sucking, swallowing, and pausing are natural instincts, babies still need to learn to feed effectively. Breastfeeding involves a set of skills that both the mother and baby must master, so be patient if you’re still getting the hang of it.
Three Tips for 4-6 Week-Old Feeding:
1. Expect more frequent feeds: Many babies experience a growth spurt around six weeks and require additional nutrients.
2. Double-sided breastfeeding: If your baby has been content with one-sided breastfeeding, they might start wanting to feed from both breasts.
3. Increased positing and small vomits: As your baby becomes more mobile and your lactation is more established, these occurrences can become more common.
Sleeping
Your baby is naturally inclined to seek comfort and security from you. This is why they calm down when you hold them and often fall asleep while feeding. Feeling safe and secure is essential for sleep, and this need starts in infancy.
Don’t feel pressured to impose strict rules around your baby’s settling at this stage. Their brain is still too immature to understand much, and they can’t modify their behaviour based on how they are cared for.
Three Tips for 4-6 Week-Old Sleeping:
1. Use a muslin or cotton wrap: Wrap your baby comfortably to avoid overheating, and keep the wrap loose enough for their legs to bend naturally.
2. Soothe in the cot: Pat and “shoosh” your baby to help them settle. Look for tired signs and give them a chance to fall asleep on their own.
3. Control light exposure: On rainy or cold days, your baby may sleep more. Use blinds or curtains to limit light and create a conducive sleeping environment.
Behaviour
There will be times when you’re unsure what your baby needs. They might cry and be unsettled, which is normal. Up to three hours of crying a day can be normal for healthy, thriving babies at this age.
Aim for a simple life and avoid taking on too much. You and your baby are still settling into a routine, and no two days will be exactly the same.
Three Tips for 4-6 Week-Old Behaviour:
1. Accept some days are for holding and feeding: Some days you won’t get much done beyond caring for your baby, and that’s perfectly normal.
2. Use your voice to calm your baby: Gentle holding and rocking combined with your voice and eye contact will be the most effective way to soothe them.
3. Provide safe floor space: Set up a safe area where you can watch your baby. Sometimes they just need to be left alone while awake but not sleepy.
What’s Important 4-6 Weeks After Birth:
- Avoid vigorous exercise: It took nine months to gain pregnancy weight, and it may take up to 12 months to lose it. Overexerting yourself can affect breast milk supply.
- Prioritize hygiene and health: Take care of your own needs to better care for your baby. Shower daily, change into clean clothes, and eat well to manage the demands of your day.
Remember, every baby is unique, and their sleep patterns will evolve over time. Trust your instincts and enjoy this precious bonding period!
