Navigating the 18-Month Sleep Regression

Navigating the 18-Month Sleep Regression:

You might have once believed you had a little sleep prodigy on your hands, effortlessly cruising through early motherhood or mastering the art of sleep training for a year and a half. But now, as the 18-month sleep regression looms ahead, it’s time to brace yourself for a new challenge. (And yes, there’s a four-month version too, but let’s save that tale for another time.)

As sleep specialists have observed, this regression often coincides with the transition from babyhood to toddlerhood. It’s a period marked by significant developmental milestones and adjustments.

Prepare

Prepare yourself to bid adieu to that beloved second nap as your little one steps into the realm of toddlerhood. But beware, bedtime now transforms into a battleground. Recent research indicates that toddlers’ biological bedtime can shift up to an hour later, throwing your once-trusted routines into disarray.

Indeed, this phase is no walk in the park. Your child may drop a nap, yet find themselves restless and unwilling to settle come bedtime. As they evolve, expect behavioural changes and boundary-testing, stretching bedtime and naptime battles to their limits. Establishing a steadfast routine becomes imperative, providing your child with a comforting and predictable lead-up to bedtime.

Persistence

Navigating night-time awakenings demands resilience. Should your toddler seek solace in your room during the small hours, choices abound. For those with a soft spot (like myself, secretly cherishing those cuddles), co-sleeping may beckon. Alternatively maintaining a bedside vigil until your little one drifts back to sleep.

Some suggest that this “regression” isn’t solely about sleep disruptions but rather mirrors a series of developmental milestones, both physical and emotional. These milestones often manifest as clinginess, fussiness, and disturbances in sleep patterns.

So, what’s a sleep-deprived parent to do? Remember, this phase is but a temporary chapter. Like so many trials of parenthood, sometimes the only remedy is to weather the storm. Rest assured, your baby will sleep again, and so will you. (At least until they’re teenagers borrowing your car for late-night escapades.)
