Do Gro clocks really work?
Do Gro Clocks Really Help with Toddler Sleep?
Working on sleep with a strong-willed toddler who knows exactly what they want can be exhausting. Many toddlers benefit from extra tools in the “sleep toolbox” to get them sleeping peacefully again. When toddlers reach the age where they start testing boundaries, they’ll likely do so with gusto. If they’re old enough to escape the crib, they’ll probably try; if they can delay bedtime with endless requests, they’ll find every possible reason to do so.
One effective tool to encourage toddlers to fall asleep, stay asleep, and remain in bed until a reasonable hour? The Gro Clock (or any sleep training clock)!
When Is the Best Time to Introduce a Gro Clock?
The ideal age to introduce a Gro Clock is typically between 2-3 years old. Under two may be too young, but by 2-3, many toddlers can grasp the concept. Since every child’s cognitive development varies, some may be ready closer to age 2, while others may need a bit more time.
Preparing for Your First Use of the Gro Clock
Before using the Gro Clock, teach your child about the day-night cycle with simple explanations about the sun and stars. Explain that the sun “goes to sleep” at night, the stars come out, and the sun returns in the morning when it’s time to wake up. This foundation helps them understand what the clock will show them.
Tips for Tackling Early Morning Wakes
- Establish a Baseline: Determine the usual wake time for your child.
- Set an Early Goal: For the first two days, set the clock 10 minutes before their usual wake time so they can achieve this early milestone. Celebrate their success with lots of praise!
- Return to Baseline: For the next two days, set the clock back to the usual wake time.
- Gradually Extend Wake Time: Set the clock 5 minutes later each day until you reach the ideal wake-up time.
Avoid setting the clock to your ideal wake time immediately, as your child may struggle to achieve it and lose interest. Starting with small, achievable goals keeps them engaged and motivated.
Make Rewards Part of the Process
Reward charts can be a fantastic motivator. Introduce a reward system for staying in bed until the clock turns yellow, and praise them when they succeed. Each time your toddler reaches their goal, continue to celebrate their success with enthusiasm.

Consistency Is Key
Like any new approach, consistency is crucial. If you’ve explained that they should stay in bed until the sun appears on the clock, try to avoid bending the rules unless absolutely necessary (e.g., for toileting accidents or illness). Consistently sticking to boundaries helps reinforce the concept.
Remember, Every Child Is Different
Some children may quickly love and respond to the Gro Clock, while others might need a few weeks or more to adapt. Some might start strong but lose interest over time. It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it’s a tried-and-true tool for supporting toddler sleep habits.
