Believe It or Not, Your Baby Doesn’t Dislike Sleep

It might not seem like it sometimes, but all babies love sleep.

Do you feel convinced that your baby or toddler hates sleep, battles sleep, or doesn’t need sleep? I understand why you might think that after struggling with sleep issues for months or even years. But let me dispel that notion: healthy babies need sleep, want sleep, and can sleep.

Before babies can sleep well, their sleep and routine foundations must be correctly set up. These foundations include a range of factors such as the process of going to sleep, understanding their natural sleep, feed, and wake cycles, ensuring they have an ideal sleep environment, having a consistent bedtime routine, and aligning their daytime and night-time schedules with their body clock.

When I work with families, I provide the same information to all of them regarding the foundations and meeting their baby’s basic sleep, feed, and wake needs. The guidance is consistent across the board to ensure all the basic foundations are understood and correctly implemented.

Babies’ Needs Are Universal

Yes, babies have different temperaments, personalities, and physical characteristics, making them unique individuals. However, their sleep requirements are quite similar relative to their age. If we had a room full of 20 eight-month-old babies, they would all have similar sleep requirements. The idea that each baby has vastly different sleep needs is a misconception that often arises when parents are dealing with poor sleep patterns.

For most families, the root of sleep issues lies in the foundations and processes not being properly set up. This misalignment works against the baby’s natural ability to fall asleep and disrupts the natural body clock’s sleep, feed, and wake cycles.

My Sleep Philosophies

1. All Babies Love Sleep: Babies can and want to sleep, provided everything is set up for them. No baby hates sleep.

2. Routine from Day One: Routine means structure and consistency around sleep, feed, and wake cycles. Babies thrive on and need consistency to fall into their natural rhythms.

3. Independent Sleep: I advocate for providing a safe sleep space for babies to sleep independently. While some families choose co-sleeping as part of attachment parenting, many others do so out of desperation and exhaustion. With the right changes and foundations, your baby can sleep well independently.

4. Natural Sleep Ability: All babies have a biological response to tiredness, which is to sleep. They have a natural relationship with sleep and can fall asleep simply because they are tired.

Breaking the Cycle

Trust me when I say your baby wants to sleep just as much as you want them to. You are both caught in an exhausting cycle that repeats daily. It’s time to break this cycle. Once everything is correctly set up, your baby’s sleep will naturally and easily fall into place. There is no baby on this earth who hates sleep.
