Taking your baby in the car can be stressful, and many moms try to avoid it. The thought of putting your baby in their car seat, especially since many dislike it, can make you want to stay home. I’ve been there! However, there will be times when you must strap them in, whether for school drop-offs or doctor’s appointments. Instead of avoiding it, here are some tips to make it easier.
First:
understand why babies often dislike car seats. Experts suggest they find them restrictive and hot, especially if already distressed. Ensure your baby is calm and comfortable before putting them in the seat to prevent upset during the drive, which can be stressful for both of you.
Check what they are wearing:
Ensure your baby is dressed comfortably and safely. An uncomfortable baby will never settle in their seat. For instance, if they’re wearing a jacket, they might feel even more distressed when strapped in. So, skip the jacket (since you can control the car’s temperature) and save it for when you take your baby out.
Check the belt straps are flat and not twisted:
Twisted straps can make your baby uncomfortable and compromise the seat’s safety. Make sure the straps are flat to keep your little one secure and comfortable.
Plan the trip around sleep time:
If possible, plan your drive around your baby’s sleep schedule or after most of their awake time. Playing some white noise or using a window shade can help them drift off to sleep. If you need to drive a bit longer to ensure they sleep, that’s okay! Enjoy the quiet time.
Have someone sit in the back with them:
If you’re not traveling alone, have your passenger sit in the back with your baby. They’ll appreciate the company and having someone close to keep them entertained and happy. It also helps them get used to being in the car.
Provide some toys:
Toys are a great way to keep your baby occupied. Consider a mirror on the seat in front of them or age-appropriate and car-safe toys that you can attach to the car seat. Brightly coloured toys with textures and sounds can keep them busy.
Play some music or sounds:
Whether it’s white noise to calm your baby or soothing tunes to help you relax, music or noise can make the trip more bearable for both of you.
Take some deep breaths:
Most importantly, take some deep breaths and try to stay calm. Taking your baby in the car can be a big and stressful task, and if they’re distressed, it can make you feel distressed too.
